A ‘Jaws’ Remake Would Suck, But Not Because It Ruins the Original
Well, my little corner of the internet is going wild due to a new report stating that Steven Spielberg might be producing a Jaws remake for Universal. Given the source, maybe take this story with several grains of salt. The general consensus I’m seeing — as with every remake/reboot announcement — is that remaking Jaws is a bad thing. That may be true, but not because it “ruins” the original, or in the case of the most overdramatic Tweeter, your childhood. In fact, a remake would actually draw more attention to the original, maybe sparking those YouTube-obsessed millennials to stream Spielberg’s classic.
Let me say this: Steven Spielberg’s Jaws is one of the greatest films ever made, and one of my personal favorites. I didn’t even watch it until I was well into high school; the artwork on the VHS tape alone scared me so badly as a child that I refused to take baths (my mom made me, though). The ocean is a terrifying place, but Spielberg somehow made it more terrifying. Jaws, as a film, is a masterpiece. But the Jaws franchise has been a laughing stock for decades.
