When the “family” movie The House with a Clock in Its Walls was released in October, many parents were surprised to find that it contained some very terrifying elements that weren’t what you may call family friendly. Parents all over the internet lashed out at the film, which was too scary for their children. With that in mind, here are five family friendly films from the past year for all ages to enjoy!

Halloween

This movie is a charming little tale of a man who comes back to his hometown on his favorite holiday to continue a tradition he started as a young boy. A sequel to the 1978 smash hit of the same name, but updated for the modern age, Halloween is sure to have your kids in stitches! The town of Haddonfield is populated by many colorful characters, from a pumpkin vandal who learns his lesson the hard way to a pair of riotous police officers who have differences in diet. You won’t want to miss this sure-to-please family adventure!

Halloween is out on digital platforms everywhere. On Blu-ray January 15th.

The Nun

A wonderful religious tale for the God-fearing family, The Nun is about a young…well, nun who has doubts about her faith. Through spiritual events, she eventually finds her faith and defeats her demons with the help of a priest and a local sinner. Many references to scripture are peppered throughout this moral tale of good and evil, faith and temptation. A great movie for kids starting to ask questions about religion.

The Nun is now available on digital, Blu-ray, and DVD.

Upgrade

This movie is such a gem. Upgrade tells the story of a man, Grey, who tragically loses his wife, but through the introduction of a new companion, finds peace. The bond between our main character and his new partner, STEM, is as endearing as it is enduring. Despite many different parties attempting to keep their relationship in the dark, or worse, tear them apart, Grey and STEM stay strong together. Those who oppose their union soon see how strong their bond is in this unconventional love story. If you have young ones, what better movie to teach them the values of love?

Upgrade is now available on digital, Blu-ray, and DVD.

A Quiet Place

This one is for the particularly young ones in your brood. A Quiet Place tells the story of a family living in isolation, away from the constant noise the modern world thrusts upon us. Throughout the movie, watch them grow stronger as a family unit through traditional means such as farming, family dinners at the table, and board games with whimsical homemade pieces. It’s heartwarming to watch a family so supportive rally around their daughter, who is deaf. They communicate for almost the entire movie through sign language, in a heartwarming tale that’s about unplugging and coming closer together with your fellow man.

A Quiet Place is now available on digital, Blu-ray, and DVD.

Sorry to Bother You

A lighthearted comedy about a man who works his way up the corporate ladder and learns some important lessons about love and loyalty, Sorry to Bother You was one of the best films of the year. The kids will love the third act, which has a beautiful stop-motion sequence followed by some of the best prosthetics and make-up work ever put to screen. A gorgeously rendered film that keeps delivering wonderful surprises around every corner, Sorry to Bother You is a win for the whole family.

Sorry to Bother You is now available on digital, Blu-ray, and DVD.
